Award-winning and best-selling author and humorist Gordon Kirkland, has taken his innate sense of humor and combined it with his love for a good mystery to create Crossbow.

Someone is killing the residents of a small Kansas town. Although the victims appear to have been randomly chosen, the killer has, in fact, decided that they must die for transgressions he believes they have committed. Among the first to be slain is the County Sherriff, leaving two deputies to try to solve the case before the killer can achieve his ultimate goal.

The deputies are far from seasoned police professionals. Dave Simmons, the senior of the two, is doing his best to improve by learning new police techniques. He'd like to bring geographic profiling to the department, but a serious impediment to that goal is his propensity to get lost whenever he gets behind the wheel of his police cruiser. Chuck Wilson the other deputy would like to be a police dog handler. Unfortunately, the County cannot afford a properly trained police dog, so he is trying to make do with Duke, his own Springer Spaniel, a dog with an intelligence quotient just slightly lower than the average head of cabbage.

Added to the mix is a missing romance author who arrived in town to interview the first murder victim just before his death, an ambitious small town newspaper reporter, who gets her leads across the pillow from the junior deputy, and the grieving father of one of the victims.

Crossbow is filled with "well-rendered" and "quirky characters and plot twists." that have readers begging for a sequel.

Crossbow edition by Gordon Kirkland Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I enjoyed this book tremendously. Gordon Kirkland continues to entertain me, and I'll almost pay retail for entertainment. As I entered Bison Springs, Kansas and was introduced to the sheriff's department, I thought that Mr. Kirkland (a Canadian by birth) had certainly visited a small plains town, but I had some misgivings about his understanding of small town police departments, especially after several murders have been committed.

BUT Mr. Kirkland is such a good author and develops his characters so well, that I easily forgot the little things and was drawn in fully and happily. His characters are believable (I think I've met all of them in my life, even Duke and Lardbutt) and the tale is woven with such skill that you forget that you are in the middle of a serial murder story in a backwater town where most of the people aren't entirely of the 21st Century with a romance/love thread thrown in.

And then there's Duke. In the investigation of one of the murders, Duke made me laugh out loud - literally - and no author has done that ... since I read my first Gordon Kirkland book. There came a point when I'd like to have told Mr. Kirkland to write a book called "Duke and Lardbutt," and I know he could do it.

If that doesn't intrigue you, then I'll just repeat: I was thoroughly entertained from page one to the well-done conclusion. I didn't know what to expect reading the other reviews and a sample of the book, but I was more than pleasantly surprised and completely satisfied. Mr. Kirkland does indeed have more than a little bit of Mark Twain in him.

If you like a good page turner, with well rendered characters and numerous plot twists - then Crossbow is for you.
Thanks Gordon for a great ride!
Can't wait for the sequel...
Gordon has crafted a fascinating story with quirky characters everywhere, and he tells the story in the same hilarious way as his humor essays. It should appeal to readers who enjoy having their tales told by a unique voice.
The more I got into the story, it became harder to put down.
Just needed to keep reading till the end.
Good story!
This is by far the best novel I have read in a long time. Minimum violence and no sex. The plot was good and the humor was excellent, It was very embarrassing reading it in public I was laughing out loud so much. The only thing wrong is that he needs to get somebody to proof read his books. It was a little annoying but not enough for me to stop reading his books. Gordon Kirkland is an excellent author and I would recommend his books to everybody.
I've read most of Gordon Kirkland's books of essay and newspaper columns. I've enjoyed the wit and humor in those books--laugh out loud till your sides hurt--humor. I didn't find that in this book, but I found something even better, an intriguing page turner story, with a lot of humor tossed in. The police dog Duke, a central figure in the story, sounds similar to Kirkland's own dog that he's written about many times--lovable but dumb. Set in a small fictitious Kansas town, where nothing much happens, until there's a string of murders that has the town's deputies scrambling for clues, motive and the killer. It's a fun read. Enjoy. I find Gordon Kirkland an interesting writer. I think a newspaper column suits him perfectly. As a novelist he is so-so. I enjoyed his books or a light reading. His story was definitely not predictable. His villain may have been underdeveloped, but it worked. In a edition I expect to make corrections in my head as to what a sentence may be trying to say, but I got confused with the characters. The reporter's name was either Wiggins, Waggans, Waggens, Wiggins, Wilson, etc. And I'm still trying to figure out who 'the Perry' was. But it was enjoyable just the same.
Having read all I could get in my of his other books, I approached Crossbow with a pleasant sense of anticipation. Thinking it would be a book of hilarious mishaps with the eventual solving of a murder, I was quickly brought up short by the seriousness of it. I love humorous fiction, and this was not it. It was better. Much better. It was not as light a read as, say, Charlotte MacLeod or the like. But I absolutely loved the quirks and twists and convoluted nature of the whole thing as it unraveled. And the humor WAS there ... right where it should be in a story like that in the background a bit, subtle, always hovering around the edges to soften the hideousness of the crime(s). Also, unlike many mystery writers, he neither gives you the knowledge of "who dun it" right up front, nor does he make you wrack your brain and then have the mystery solved by someone who had knowledge all along that the reader had no way of knowing. The hints are there.
The characters are great, if slightly stereotypical. I will be happy to go back and visit them in the sequel! But Duke, by far, steals the show.
