The Oxen Are Slow is a story of taboo love. Cary, an American writer newly arrived in 1958 Malaya, encounters four sisters, who are each unique in a provocative way. "A handsome stranger appears and no one can find a decent dress to wear," laments Noor. Noor, their mother, is married to her fourth husband, the owner of a eucalyptus plantation who is murdered. The murder mystery may be solved, but what of the four daughters? Down what forbidden path, winding into the dark unknown—for their love is forbidden—do Cary and his lover tumble?

One is quickly drawn into Hartley’s latest book, a tantalizing tale of a murder and a compelling love story. It is truly difficult to put down once the reading begins. Through the eyes of journalist Cary from Boston, you view British Malaya in 1958: the lifestyle of the British on their rubber and eucalyptus plantations, the war with the Chinese Communists, and the constant struggle to thrive in the beautiful but wild jungles of Southeast Asia. Captivating are four alluring daughters who reside at Renda Indah meaning “lovely lace.”Mr. Hartley is a consummate storyteller who weaves a tale of intrigue, suspense, and complex, oft complicit, relationships. Just as the human-like gibbons who swing from tree to tree, “nothing is what it seems.” Hartley is a master with dialogue. By writing engaging speech his divergent characters come alive. The story line, vivid locale and fast moving pace of the action give the book a cinematic quality. The book is not long but it definitely packs a punch.

The Oxen Are Slow Robert Hartley 9781517052850 Books Reviews
Cary Foster, painter and aspiring author, goes to British Malaya to write an in-depth article about the post-colonial period and arrives in the aftermath of a murder. The 4th husband of matriarch Noor is the victim. Suspects include Noor's mother, Irish expat Flume Muldoon, and Tedung, a diseased, crazed, communist guerrilla who is stalking two newly arrived missionary women. Cary becomes intrigued by plantation owner Noor and her four daughters, especially sassy fifteen-year-old Phuang, and Cheng, the oldest, whose physical attributes (she is tall, plain; has thick lips and muscular legs) somehow arouse Cary. He mingles with plantation owners and locals, muses about his deteriorating marriage, and is seduced by Noor and two of her daughters. Is one of them the murderer? Will Cary return to his uptight wife and his former life as a banker? Or will the steamy jungle, exotic food, and interesting characters of the multinational community entice him to stray?
